Letter Openers

Nothing beats a wrought-iron letter-opener as an elegant way to open your correspondence. You might even find yourself opening your junk mail, just for the fun of it!

In this class we will use the tools of the blacksmith to make one or more letter openers. We will use many of the techniques used by knifesmiths and forge a piece of mild steel into a blade and handle, but unlike a knifesmith, we will not concern ourselves with hardening and tempering the blade. While not required, this class is an excellent precursor to any of our knife classes.

Gift Certificates for Letter Openers are available.

Yes, really, we're still asking for it in 2024.
It's still out there, and no fun at all.

Students should have taken "A Taste of Blacksmithing" or have some small amount of smithing experience.

Please wear proper clothing for visiting or working in the forge:
closed toe shoes (preferably leather, preferably high-topped. Sneakers are sufficient, sandals, crocs, pumps, mules... are not), natural fiber clothing, long pants that cover the tops of the shoes.
