I just got a call from Mike.

The MBTA Repair Facility Tour is Cancelled

Mike finally went over to the facility because he was getting no reply to his phone and email inquiries. It turns out that the smithing area is being reorganized and that the power hammer is still in need of repair.

While the place is interesting even in its quiescent state, they'd rather not show it that way.

We will be attempting to re-schedule, but it will be at least a month until the next opportunity.

Old description follows:

We've arranged to visit the blacksmithing section of the MBTA's Everett Repair Shop, where they still have blacksmiths on staff to keep the country's oldest public transit system operational. This is a very special opportunity to see working smiths using hammer and anvil because sometimes that's still the best way to get the job done.

The plan is that they'll be using their power hammer for some heavy work while we're there, and for technological contrast, the plasma cutter as well.

Afterward we'll likely retire to Mike's Roast Beef, across the street from the repair shop.

Gift Certificates for are available.

Yes, really, we're still asking for it in 2025.
It's still out there, and no fun at all.

Please wear proper clothing for visiting or working in the forge:
closed toe shoes (preferably leather, preferably high-topped. Sneakers are sufficient, sandals, crocs, pumps, mules... are not), natural fiber clothing, long pants that cover the tops of the shoes.
