For this class I have chosen to use Jitsi as the group-meeting tool because it will run on two of my devices, allowing me to have a movable camera and a reasonable console. It seems to require the app for use on Android devices, but will run in Chrome on a Chromebook (more when I know more). Clicking the link above will tell you what you need to make it go on your device.

The student must have: (please read this carefully)

• Their own blacksmithing set up:
• A forge, lit and running by the beginning of class, type is unimportant (being able to back-down a gas forge while we're talking would likely be good)
• An anvil-like object
• A hammer, 1 to 2 pound, no larger.
• Tongs to hold the stock
• Tongs to hold thin, flat material (the leaf)
• A cutting hardy or chisel
• A vise would be really nice
• Eye and ear protection
• Ear buds or somesuch that fit under your ear protection so that you can hear me while you're hammering.
• A device that will run Jitsi, has a camera and a microphone
• The ability to move that device around the work space so I can watch you work from helpful angles. A photographer's tripod and some way to hold your device on it would be marvelous
• Enough light. So both of us can see what you're doing

Materials

I'd like to try having a few auditors, not actually forging or participating, though possibly chatting in the Jitsi app.

Maximum 4 students, one per forge

Please wear proper clothing for visiting or working in the forge:
- closed top shoes
(Preferably leather, preferably high-topped. Sneakers are sufficient... but sandals, crocs, pumps, mules... are not. If you can see the skin of your foot, or the foot of your socks, it's not good enough.)
- natural fiber clothing
(Synthetics are a risk because: IF a HOT thing touches them it's likely that the material will melt and stick to your flesh, making the burn even worse than it would be through a natural fiber.)
- long pants that cover the tops of the shoes.
(To keep hot coals and bits of steel from getting down into your shoes. Which I hear is a bunch of No Fun.) Click here for more safety information.

- or we've fallen behind in our clerical duties and not entered it in the database.
