The Russian Rose Online
Puttin' the metal to the petal. On-line.

There are several styles of roses made by smiths...
There's the riveted rose, it can look pretty good. (You can even buy kits of laser-cut petals to shape and rivet together.)
There's the one-piece-out-of-solid-stock rose that is sometimes described in the old books as something you find in guild master pieces.
The Russian Rose is a fairly simple design that, in its simplest form, can be bashed out in ten or twelve heats.
Done small, it can be a hair stick, made larger, it can be one of a dozen for a grand presentation. We will make fair-sized ones, all the better to see what you're doing.

We will have time to make several tries at variations on this basic rose.
There are tweaks we will try... exercises in pre-allocation of mass and curve; adding petals, and adding flare.

The student must have: (please read this carefully)

Three pieces of least 14" of ~1/4" round steel, preferably mild. 24" or longer is better.
If it's 18" or more long you won't *need* the stock-sized tongs.

Gift Certificates for The Russian Rose Online are available.

3 hours, one meeting    dates&times

Instructor: Carl West
Tuition: $95 per student
Maximum 4 students, one per forge

Required: A rapid Covid test that day.
Yes, really, we're still asking for it in 2024.
It's still out there, and no fun at all.

The student should have decent control of flattening, bending, and curving. Being able to draw a short point is useful.

Please wear proper clothing for visiting or working in the forge:
closed toe shoes (preferably leather, preferably high-topped. Sneakers are sufficient, sandals, crocs, pumps, mules... are not), natural fiber clothing, long pants that cover the tops of the shoes.
