Appropriate For:
•Anyone with solid fundamental blacksmithing skills who is interested in expanding their traditional architectural iron skills.
•Growing intermediate smiths who want to pursue ABANA Level II certification.
•Teachers interested in earning ABANA instructor certifications (ABANA Level II is required for National Novice Instructors).
Suggestions:
•Bring a notebook or sketchbook, and plan to take notes in some form!
•Review the tool lists, and bring all you have.
•Be prepared to look after your needs (food, drink, safety, various weather conditions, etc).
•Think about your own learning style, and be prepared to ask for what you need.
•If you are working towards certification, review the Level II requirements (abana.org) and assess what you need to learn/do.
•Expect to build your skills! Don’t expect to go home with cool projects. We will focus on forging practice pieces, only.

Yes, really, we're still asking for it in 2024.
It's still out there, and no fun at all.

Level II Skills Prerequisites

You’ll be well prepared for Level II learning if you have these fundamental blacksmithing skills. This usually means doing at least 10
different projects (some more than once), and having forged for over a year.

•Draw tapers: square, ribbon, and round (S-O-R)
•Upset
•Fullering: width spread with peen, and necking down with tools/edge
•Twist
•Straighten unwanted bends
•Scroll: round eye and expanding scroll
•Bend as needed: 90°, folds, curves
•Half-face blows
•Punch holes
•Hot cut (slitting)
•Rivet
•Forge weld
•Heat treat tool steel
•Localized quenching
•Good coal fire management and safety as a habit

How good to you need to be at these?
-You should have done all of them.
-You should have reasonable control over most of them.
-You should be very comfortable (and well controlled) with at least 5 of these skills.
What if I’m not that good?
If you have a foundation of basics, but not all of these skills, you will probably still learn a ton. Just don’t expect to be successful in
everything that is taught. Instructor time will be focused on getting students to meet an intermediate standard- coaching on very basic
skills will be very limited. In deciding to register (or not) for the class at this point in your blacksmithing growth, consider whether you
learn well when slightly overwhelmed.

Please wear proper clothing for visiting or working in the forge:
closed toe shoes (preferably leather, preferably high-topped. Sneakers are sufficient, sandals, crocs, pumps, mules... are not), natural fiber clothing, long pants that cover the tops of the shoes.
